About the Infinity Project

What is the Infinity Project?
The Infinity Project is a high school mathematics and science-based engineering and technology education initiative that helps educators deliver a maximum of engineering exposure with a minimum of training, expense and time. Created to help students see the real value of math and science and its varied applications to high tech engineering.

Further details can be obtained from the project web site www.infinity-project.org

The project provides an extensive collection of resources to enable accredited teachers to engage their students in the mathematics and science required to support the world of digital engineering.

Infinity at Redcliffe State High School
At Redcliffe SHS we have created a new subject for our year 10 students which we have called Digital Mathematics. This is studied in year 10 as a second elective mathematics subject. The intention is to provide meaningful examples of how mathematics is used in modern digital technology and encourage students to pursue the study of higher level mathmatics and science subjects in years 11 & 12. Some stand alone activities have been incorporated into the Year 11 Mathematics C program. (See Photo)
Introduced Initially as a one semester course in 2008 it will be extended to a full year subject in 2009.
Students investigate the mathematics of digital sound, digital images and digital communications or to put it another way mp3 players, digital cameras/videos and mobile phones. This certainly relates mathematics to objects of great interest to most students.

For more information contact Jim Lowe jlowe10@eq.edu.au at Redcliffe SHS.

Jim will be making a presentation on the project at the QAMT annual conference at the end of June.

It is our goal to collate details of interested teachers with a view to conducting a training course here in Australia.
Year 11 Maths C students investigate the multiplication of a matrix by a constant and discover that they have changed the contrast of the webcam image.
